Caring for Your Bamboo Kit So It Lasts
Bamboo activewear is one of the most rewarding investments you can make in your wardrobe — but like all natural fibres, it rewards a little care and attention. Follow this guide and your bamboo kit will stay soft, fresh, and performance-ready for years to come.
Why Bamboo Needs Gentle Care
Bamboo viscose is a semi-natural fibre: it starts life as a plant but is processed into fabric through a closed loop process that creates a fine, silky yarn. This gives bamboo its wonderful softness and drape — but it also means the fibres are more delicate than, say, a heavy cotton jersey. Treat your bamboo kit with the same care you'd give a silk blouse, and it will reward you handsomely.
Washing Your Bamboo Activewear
1. Always Use Cold or Cool Water
Hot water is the enemy of bamboo fabric. High temperatures can cause the fibres to shrink, lose their shape, and break down more quickly. Wash your bamboo kit at 30°C or below — most modern detergents are formulated to clean effectively at cool temperatures anyway.
2. Choose a Gentle or Delicates Cycle
The agitation of a standard wash cycle can stress bamboo fibres over time. Use your machine's gentle, delicates, or hand-wash cycle to minimise mechanical stress. If your machine has a sportswear cycle, that can also work well — it's typically lower-agitation than a standard cotton cycle.
3. Use a Mild, pH-Neutral Detergent
Avoid biological detergents with enzymes, which can break down natural protein fibres. Opt for a mild, pH-neutral detergent — or one specifically formulated for delicates or wool. Avoid fabric softeners: they coat the fibres and reduce bamboo's natural moisture-wicking ability over time.
4. Turn Garments Inside Out
Turning your bamboo leggings, bras, and tops inside out before washing protects the outer surface from friction and helps preserve colour vibrancy. This is especially important for darker colours.
5. Wash Promptly After Sweaty Sessions
Bamboo's natural antibacterial properties are impressive, but leaving sweaty kit in a gym bag for days will eventually overwhelm them. Rinse or wash your bamboo activewear promptly after intense sessions — ideally within 24 hours.
Drying Your Bamboo Kit
Air Dry Wherever Possible
The tumble dryer is the single biggest threat to bamboo activewear longevity. High heat causes shrinkage and fibre degradation. Lay your bamboo garments flat to dry on a clean towel or hang them on a clothes airer away from direct sunlight and heat sources. They'll dry surprisingly quickly thanks to bamboo's natural moisture-releasing properties.
If You Must Tumble Dry
Use the lowest heat setting and remove garments while still slightly damp. Never tumble dry on high heat.
Storing Your Bamboo Activewear
Store bamboo garments folded rather than on hangers — the weight of the fabric can cause stretching over time if hung for extended periods. Keep them in a cool, dry drawer away from direct sunlight, which can fade colours gradually.
What to Avoid
- Bleach: Never use chlorine bleach on bamboo — it will destroy the fibres
- Hot washes: Stick to 30°C maximum
- Fabric softener: Reduces moisture-wicking performance
- Ironing on high heat: If you need to iron, use a cool setting with a pressing cloth
- Dry cleaning solvents: Harsh chemicals can damage bamboo fibres
The Sustainability Case for Making It Last
The most sustainable garment is the one you already own — worn many times over. By caring properly for your bamboo activewear, you're extending its useful life and reducing the environmental footprint of your wardrobe. A well-cared-for bamboo legging can last three to five years of regular use; a neglected one might last six months.
This is why we design every piece in our Bamboo Yoga Clothing range to be durable as well as beautiful. Our Women's Bamboo Leggings and Women's Bamboton Boomerang Bra are built to go the distance — and with the right care, they will.
